Message from the Head of School
At DKJA, we often find ourselves referring our amazing school as a "Leadership Academy." Day after day, we hear of outstanding examples of our students who excel as true leaders, even though they have not yet entered the "real world." This reaffirms my pride in the superior quality education we provide, and the knowledge that we really are preparing our students for success when they leave our campus for opportunities in higher education and eventually in the ever-competitive work force.
Today, a dynamic group of future leaders (photo at left) participated in the Administrator for a Day program, an offering we make available every year to allow lower and middle school students to see what it's like to perform duties of the Head of School, principals, and librarian. These young leaders never cease to amaze me. Great things lie ahead for them!
Our high school students continue to make me kvell on a daily basis, with leadership qualities beyond belief. I recently learned that senior Alexander Zafran has been accepted into the George Washington University Honors Program. In order to be selected for admission, applicants must be ranked in the top 5 to 10 percent of their high school class, demonstrate intellectual curiosity, and have shown a desire to engage with their teachers and challenge themselves. Alexander is member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, a co-founder of SPOT (Students’ Political Organization of Today), and a writer for the financial blog Wallstreetreviewer.com, among too many other accomplishments to list. He has already demonstrated his interest in global education as well as leadership.
Senior Emily Swire, an accomplished singer and actor, has a long resume of theatrical achievements to her credit. She recently was presented with three scholarship awards: a Palm Beach Post 2009 Pathfinder Award (third place) in the Music/Vocal category, The Delray Beach Playhouse Ernest G. Simon Scholarship Award for Performance, and a Relgalf Music Scholarship Fund Award. Emily will continue her studies next year at Florida State University in the Theatre Program.
Senior Dana Kandel was accepted into a one-year Yeshiva program called Machon Ma’ayan in Israel as she defers her acceptance to Brandeis University for one year. It is an intense Jewish learning program that puts emphasis on leadership and internship.
Please join me in congratulating our outstanding students!
Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller
Head of School

Konnichiwa Gallery Set to Open
The fourth-graders welcome the community to tour their Konnichiwa Japan Museum, which will be open to the public May 19 through May 22, 2009. The exhibit will be located inside the Nathan D. Rosen Museum Gallery in the Sandler Center on the campus of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, off Glades Road at 95th Avenue in Boca Raton. The gallery is the culmination of the students’ intensive six-month immersion into the Japanese way of life. The students have used this knowledge in the creation of their gallery and will escort visitors through fascinating exhibits that present a comprehensive lo ok at Japan. The theme for this year’s gallery is “Bata Bata 24/7: Japanese Students on the Go.” Under the direction of lower school art teacher Gale Lowy, students created themed artwork, which will be showcased at the Konnichiwa Japan Museum.
The public is invited to tour the Konnichiwa Japan Gallery as follows:
• Tuesday, May 19 - Thursday, May 21 during the hours of 9 to 11 a.m. AND 1 to 3 p.m.
• Friday, May 22 during the hours of 9 to 11 a.m. AND 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
